Why a Roadside Top Up Beats a Walk to the Pump

Setting off on foot along a fast road to find a forecourt is risky, and summer heat makes it worse.

A mobile fuel run brings enough to get the engine going so you can drive to a proper station and fill the tank there. You wait somewhere safe while a technician deals with the refuelling.

The Hidden Cost of Driving Until the Engine Stops

Most cars survive one run to empty, yet it is not entirely harmless.

Now checking: In-tank fuel pump

  1. In-tank fuel pump

    Checking

Many modern cars mount an electric pump inside the tank, where surrounding fuel keeps its motor cool. Run dry, it gets hotter and wears faster.

  2. Sediment in the tank

    Queued

Deposits and rust settle at the bottom of a tank over the years, and the last litres can carry that debris towards the filter.

  3. Stopping in a live lane

    Queued

The bigger danger is often where the car halts. Dubai Police have warned that cars stopping in moving traffic after running out of fuel can trigger serious crashes.

Petrol or diesel

Matching the Fuel to Your Engine

UAE forecourts sell three petrol grades plus diesel. A national committee reviews pump prices every month, so we do not list figures here.

Suited to

Super 98
High compression and performance engines
Special 95
Medium compression engines found in many saloons
E-Plus 91
Low compression engines, popular with fleets
Diesel
Diesel cars, pick-ups, vans and trucks

Worth knowing

Super 98
Only needed if your manufacturer specifies it
Special 95
Confirm the minimum octane on the filler flap label
E-Plus 91
A higher octane than required gives no extra economy
Diesel
Never mix with petrol, even in small quantities

If you are unsure which grade to request, the owner's manual states what the engine needs.

Filled Up With the Wrong Fuel? Leave the Ignition Off

Petrol in a diesel engine, or diesel in a petrol one, is a different job from an empty tank. Switching on lets the pump circulate the wrong fuel through the lines, which is where costly damage begins. Put the car in neutral, get help to push it away from the pumps, and arrange for the tank to be drained and flushed.

Diesel drivers

Why a Diesel May Not Restart Straight Away

Diesel injection systems depend on the fuel itself for lubrication. The AA notes that when a pump and injectors run dry their surfaces can be scored, with symptoms that only appear weeks or months afterwards.

Air also enters the lines and filter once the tank empties. Some engines clear it after the ignition is cycled a few times; others need priming with a hand pump as the handbook describes.

What Happens After You Ask for Fuel

  1. 01

Name the fuel and your spot

Say whether the car takes petrol or diesel, mention the grade if you know it and share a live location pin.

  2. 02

    Move clear of traffic

Wait well away from passing vehicles. On a fast road that means out of the car and at a safe spot off the carriageway.

  3. 03

    Fuel goes into the tank

The technician adds the amount agreed on the call and closes the filler cap before you try to start.

  4. 04

    Drive on to a station

With the engine running, head to the nearest forecourt and fill up. If a diesel will not catch, the system may need priming first.

Reading the gauge

How Far Can You Go After the Low Fuel Light Comes On?

There is no single answer. A float and sender unit report the level, and each manufacturer picks its own trigger point for the lamp, so the reserve varies widely between models.

The distance to empty readout is only an estimate, and motoring groups advise against trusting it to the last kilometre. Treat the lamp as a cue to refuel at the next station.

Staying Safe Until Help Arrives

Dubai Police guidance for a car that cannot carry on comes down to a few points.

Stopping in the middle of the road without good reason can bring a AED 1,000 fine and six black points under UAE federal traffic law.

  • Switch on the hazard warning lights the moment the engine falters
  • Coast towards the nearest exit or the right shoulder while the car is still rolling
  • Avoid halting in a moving lane unless there is truly no choice
  • Get everyone out and away from the road to a safe place
  • Set a warning triangle behind the car only if you can do it safely
  • Call 999 if the vehicle is stuck where traffic could hit it
FAQs

Emergency Fuel Delivery: Common Questions

  • It is best avoided. The in-tank pump relies on surrounding fuel to stay cool, sediment can reach the filter, and diesel injection parts can be scored when run dry.

Tank Empty Right Now?

Share your pin and the fuel your car takes, then wait somewhere safe while a technician brings it over.
